Visceral and subcutaneous fat

چکیده
Radiol Bras. 2014 Mai/Jun;47(3):IX Obesity is currently a public health problem, presenting prevalent exponential growth in all age groups, particularly in children and adolescents. Accumulation of visceral fat is associated with increased cardiovascular risk, metabolic syndrome (hypertension, dyslipidemia, type II diabetes) and insulin resistance. There is a greater correlation than that with body mass índex and abdominal circumference measurement. In obese patients, it is difficult to estimate the amount of visceral and subcutaneous fat. Methods utilized to evaluate visceral fat include bioelectrical impedance analysis, ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and body fat densitometry (DEXA). CT and DEXA have good sensitivity and specificity, but involve irradiation and their costs are high than the cost of US. MRI is excellent, but it is also more expensive than US. Bioelectrical impedance analysis is not a dominion of radiology and presents interferences, therefore US is the current method of choice.

متن کاملSonographic Prediction of Body Fat Volume (Subcutaneous and Visceral Fat) in Cardiovascular Patients
BACKGROUND Inappropriate body composition represents impaired energy and nutrient intake and can be a risk factor for many diseases, especially for cardiovascular disease. Different methods have been suggested for the estimation of body fat volume and its distribution. However, they may be either expensive or hazardous for some groups of patients. Sonography is a very accessible technique, whic...
متن کاملInfluence of visceral and subcutaneous fat in bone mineral density of obese adolescents.
OBJECTIVE To verify the influence of visceral and subcutaneous fat, as well adipokines in bone mineral density (BMD) in obese adolescents. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The study involved 125 postpubertal obese adolescents (45 boys and 80 girls). Anthropometric measurements, body composition, visceral and subcutaneous fat, and BMD were determined. Leptin, adiponectin, and insulin levels also analyzed....

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of abdominal visceral and subcutaneous fat, independent of total body fat, with cardiometabolic risk factors and insulin resistance among youth. Visceral and subcutaneous fat, percentage total body fat, insulin resistance (adjusted for lean body mass: Mlbm), blood pressure, glucose, insulin and lipids were obtained in 472 youth ages 6-18 yea...
